Moneyball [22 Jun 2009|09:04am]

The movie Moneyball by Soderbergh that was set to star Brad Pitt and Demitri Martin and start shooting this week was JUST PULLED!

How cool would it have been to have an Oakland A's movie? I haven't seen a good one since Battle of the Bay. :)

Greetings from San Diego [21 Jun 2009|10:10pm]

Hi everyone,

Well this community is a little dead so I thought I'd give a little update here.  I'm almost done with school down here in San Diego (moved down in 2005) and I've been waiting for the A's to play the Padres in interleague for what seems like an eternity!  And alas, they finally played so I had the wonderful opportunity to go to Petco Park for Saturday and Sunday's game!  I'm still amazed at how beautiful Petco Park is, it's only been my third time there since the WBC.  Fans and overall crowd were very friendly and I thought the two teams were a great matchup seeing how both aren't doing so well.  I admit it's been hard trying to follow the A's down here so I was very unfamiliar with all of our new pitchers.

Anyways, here are some measley shots from my 5.0 megapixel camera in case anyone is interested haha! )

Overall there were a decent amount of A's fans scattered about.  Was anyone else down here?  Also, my friend and I went out to eat at a fish taco place afterwards and Kevin Kouzmanoff came by too so it was nice meeting him even though he didn't want to take a picture with me because I was wearing all my A's gear haha.

Happy Father's Day to any fathers out there!  I wish I could see the Bay Bridge matchup but oh well!  Here's to a better season after all star break?

Game 1: A's vs. Angels Opening Day Thread [06 Apr 2009|06:12pm]

phut
I didn't see a thread for this, but I want to get this up just in case anyone wants to talk about the game right now.

So far, I am just happy to see the A's in regular season mode. Also, they are wearing their "home" batting helmets just like they used to back in the 80s and 90s. I like it.

Jason's officially back [07 Jan 2009|02:45pm]

phut

I remember when this came out and I thought it was so awesome. Now he's officially back after 7 years of playing in Oakland.

OFFICIAL LINK

I only caught a portion of the press conference, but it seems like he's just relieved to be back. But can this soon to be 38-year old really help out the A's?

Giambino [06 Jan 2009|12:43am]

sinsterminister
It appears imminent that the A's are going to land Jason Giambi. Despite his defensive shortcomings, he'll likely be the regular first baseman if he doesn't get hurt or look terrible in Spring Training. Which begs the question...

What's the reaction of the Oakland crowd when Giambi returns? I have to think overall anything that helps the A's is the most important, but I'd expect a large group that flat-out won't accept him as a member of this club after basically selling himself to the highest bidder and becoming one of the modern day poster boys of the steroid era. When the chatter began about Bonds maybe coming across the bay, many said they'd never accept a known steroid user.

Again, I think the reaction will be mostly positive and welcoming, but there will be plenty unhapppy. Thoughts?

Brad Ziegler t-shirt [20 Oct 2008|08:00pm]

flashfire
Hey everyone.

I know this community doesn't get a ton of activity but I wanted to let you know about a t-shirt I've designed of Brad Ziegler that I'm selling.

As a little backstory, I met Brad up in Sacramento this year while I was doing some photography for Scout.com and since then we've kept in touch and I've sent him some prints I made. He gave me the green light to sell the shirts and I'll be sending about a dozen to him for friends and family.

Most of the main information (including sizing options and who's making the shirts for me) can be found in this post on Athletics Nation.

This morning he asked me about the possibility of redesigning the shirt a little so the high socks and long-sleeved shirt stand out and I think the result is much more stylish:

Don't worry about the brighter background. It's just a base and I have a single color done with just the gold on a darker green shirt comparable to the ones the A's wear under their jerseys.

If anyone here is interested in buying a shirt, feel free to e-mail me (flashfire at speakeasy dot net) with your name and username and I'll add you to a list I'm keeping. Once I finalize things with Brad I'll start asking people for money. They'll be $20 each and I've told others if they want a couple I'll sell two for $35.

Thanks in advance!

Harden trade... [12 Jul 2008|11:44am]

ichbineinbrlinr

All year I've been talking about how I wanted the Harden to stay healthy so we could trade him by the deadline and get something for him, and when that happened, I had mixed emotions.  Watching him pitch against the Giants today I feel kinda dirty that I ever wanted him gone, so I was just wondering how you guys feel about this trade in particular and how you feel as an A's fan overall when Beane makes trades like this?

It's been a rough year for me as far as trades go, my 3 favorite A's were Scutaro, Swisher, and Gaudin, but with every game I watch I gain more and more respect for Ellis.  I  wasn't crazy about this team at the beginning of the season, but as the season progresses, this may be my favorite team the A's have ever fielded (other than of course the team I grew up watching with McGwire, Berroa, Ariel Prieto, and Rafael Bournigal).  Ryan Sweeney, Dana Eveland, and Greg Smith have been pleasant surprises, I love this rotation, and I'm really starting to appreciate Suzuki.

Just wanted to see how you guys felt...

Who would you like up in this situation? [02 Jul 2008|03:40pm]

phut
I was thinking about this for a bit and I wondered what all of you thought. The A's are still in the race for the division crown so it looks like there will be very intense games in August, September and hopefully into October.

But with tight games comes key performances. Which players will step up? Well, let me ask you guys.

Which current A's player would you like up in these situations?

1- To get a single to tie the game: Game-tying run on second, two outs, bottom 9th.

2- To hit a home run to cap a 9th inning rally: Down one run, runner on first, two outs bottom 9th.

3- To lead off the bottom of the 9th to start a rally.

4- To start on the hill of Game 7 of a playoff series at home.

5- To start on the hill of Game 7 of a playoff series on the road.

6- To relieve a starting pitcher with inherited runners to protect a lead.

7- To work a two-inning or five-out save.

8- To close the game with a one-run lead in the 9th.

If you have any reasons as to why you chose these players, feel free to state.

the outfield [16 Jun 2008|11:17am]

Theres an interesting poll on oaklandathletics.com. Not sure if you've seen it but its asking which of our outfielders should get the most playing time, but it doesnt quite cover all the possibilities. And obviously, it doesnt allow me to hear why A's fans voted the way they did. So between Buck, Brown, Cust, Ryan Sweeney, Gonzalez, and Davis which three should get the most playing time? Why? And does your answer change when Thomas comes off the DL?

okay, really? we are half a game behind the angels right now? even with harden and foulke and chavez out . . .

rebuilding? it looks like that word does not exist in billy beane's vocabulary.

i only wish i could watch more games! being on the east coast blows sometimes.

whats goin on? [24 Apr 2008|09:20pm]

This is a rebuilding year right? How come it doesnt feel like it? Do we really have good starting pitching with an amazingly great bullpen? We can randomly score runs in the double digits? Would a healthy Chavez, Harden, Buck, Calero, Foulke, and Duchscherer make us even better? We didnt just pick up big Frank to power us into the postseason a la 2006 did we?

No A's fan could have asked for a better start to the season. We're tied atop the AL West with the second most wins in the AL. Its like I gotta really try to keep this from getting to my head. I cant just go around bragging about how great the A's are. This is a rebuilding year, we're not gonna make the playoffs, we're supposed to be dang happy with .500 ball... right? Anyone else trying not to get too excited about our boys?
